Sleep and Fitness: Why Rest Is Part of Your Training Plan

We often treat sleep as optional, but it is when much of your recovery happens. Adults are generally advised to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.

What poor sleep can do

Studies consistently link short sleep with lower energy, reduced exercise performance, higher stress, and stronger cravings for high-calorie foods. It is not a willpower problem; it is biology.

Realistic habits for busy parents

  • Keep a consistent wake time, even on weekends, when possible.
  • Get morning light. A short walk outside helps set your body clock.
  • Cut caffeine by early afternoon.
  • Create a 20-minute wind-down: dim lights, stretch, screens away.
  • Keep the bedroom cool and dark.
  • Finish intense workouts a few hours before bed if they keep you wired.

When sleep is broken by a baby or young kids

Perfect sleep may not be possible. On rough nights, swap a hard workout for a walk or gentle stretching, nap when you can, and be kind to yourself.

When to get help

If you snore loudly, wake unrefreshed, or struggle with insomnia for weeks, talk with your healthcare provider.
